In 1975, Los Angeles residents Richard Adams (right), an American citizen, married Anthony Sullivan (center), an Australian citizen, in Boulder, Colorado. When Adams petitioned the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to classify Sullivan as his “immediate relative,” the INS district director wrote back: “You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots.” Photo by Rob Brown.
