In 1864, Charlotte Brown brought a lawsuit challenging the segregation of San Francisco streetcars. Judge C.C. Pratt ruled such segregation illegal. San Francisco newspapers responded with racist editorials and cartoons like this one entitled “The Effect of Judge Pratt’s Decision.” Undated newspaper clipping, MS 228A, Charlotte L. Brown.
