In 1956, police arrested poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti for selling Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl” at his City Lights bookstore in San Francisco’s North Beach.  Ferlinghetti (right) shown here at the San Francisco Hall of Justice with one of his attorneys, Lawrence Speiser, was acquitted.
