Fred Korematsu (third from left) was imprisoned for defying military orders that Japanese Americans leave their homes to be incarcerated in desolate camps. He challenged the government, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against him. Forty years later, he was vindicated when a federal judge overturned his conviction because the government had deliberately omitted relevant information and provided misleading information to the court. In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded Korematsu the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Courtesy of Karen Korematsu
