Governor Brown signed into law a bill preventing the state of California, counties and cities from mandating that employers use the federal government's E-Verify system to make sure that employees and job applicants can legally work in the U.S.

Several California cities had passed such ordinances, which proponents believed would curb the number of undocumented workers.

But critics argued that the E-Verify database is full of errors and consequently results in a "No Work" list for Americans seeking employment.
